Due to its very compact design (occupying less than half of a normal briefcase), low weight and low power consumption (370 mW typical in listen mode), the Thrane & Thrane is is the best choice for remote field operations. The handset works like a normal GSM telephone using its integrated handset or from an auxillary phone port. A conventional fax machine can also be connected to the phone port. Data connections are achieved with a standard RS-232 serial connection. The small and discrete flat panel antenna is completely sealed for true outdoor operation, and may be relocated up to 70 meters from the handset so that the phone electronics can be inside a building while the antenna remains outside in the most extreme weather conditions. The Thrane & Thrane uses has coverage in the entire mini-M Inmarsat
coverage area, as shown below. It can make calls from any covered
area at a simple flat per minute rate, no matter what land line
phone number is called. Calls to other satellite phones may vary.
There is a no monthly service fee plan. The Thrane & Thrane has a built-in NiCd battery for 2-day listen time and approx. 2.5 hours of talk time. A 9-18 V DC charger and a small external AC adapter allow universal AC/DC power access. Special power conservation modes and optional solar panels make the Thrane & Thrane the best choice for operation in locations where conventional power sources are unavailable. Optional STU-IIB/STU-III is available for secure communications
requirements.
