WARNING: Inmarsat is phasing out Regional BGAN (RBGAN) service to allow more capacity for its newer and more powerful BGAN service. RBGAN service will not be available after December 31, 2008. For this reason, HNS-9101 RBGAN terminals are available at very low cost but the customer must understand that the terminal will not be usable after December 31, 2008. Customers may purchase prepaid usage but the validity will not extend beyond December 31, 2008 and any unused prepaid RBGAN usage would at that point be lost.

The RBGAN HNS-9101 (Regional Broadband Global Area Network) data-only satellite terminal provides internet access speeds up to 144 kbps* for most of Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and the Indian Ocean with additional coverage starting mid-April 2006 in South America. It is easy to use. Simply connect the RBGAN modem to your computer using standard Ethernet, USB, or Bluetooth equipment. (Windows 98, ME, 2000, NT, XP, and Macintosh OS 10 or higher)

Sattrans External Antenna for HNS-9101 RBGAN Data transfer (upload or download) is charged by the MegaByte. Outfitter Satellite offers a variety of postpaid and prepaid service plans for every budget. Unlike BGAN, RBGAN does not offer voice or streaming data service. The laptop-sized RBGAN unit weighs only 4.1 lbs and is ideal for portable as well as fixed-site applications.

Inmarsat RBGAN and BGAN coverage as of December 2005 is indicated by the spot beams enclosed by the red oblate circle. Additional Inmarsat RBGAN and BGAN coverage as indicated by the spot beams enclosed by the blue oblate circle is expected to begin mid-April 2006 -- except that RBGAN coverage will not be offered in North and Central America. The additional coverage will be in South America and western Africa.
Inmarsat RBGAN Coverage Area: Spot beams within the red circled region (F1) have both RBGAN and BGAN service coverage. Spot beams in the blue circled region (F2) are expected to have BGAN coverage starting mid-April 2006. RBGAN coverage will not be provided to North and Central America, but South America and Western Africa, will have RBGAN coverage by mid-April 2006 using the F2 satellite. The map depicts expectations of coverage, but does not represent a guarantee of service. The availability of service at the edge of coverage areas depends on a variety of conditions and is subject to licensing.

History of RBGAN: Inmarsat developed one of the most powerful communications satellites ever built, the I-4 satellite. The first I-4 satellite (F1) was launched into geosynchronous orbit from Cape Canaveral on March 11, 2005. The satellites are about the size of a bus and should operate for about 15 years providing BGAN coverage to roughly 85% of the earth’s land surface.
