- Globalstar Becomes a Lifeline When Thirteen People Are Thrown into Green River After Raft Capsizes -
Eric embedded Photojournalist (Iraq war 2003) I had organized a rafting trip for our church youth group. Now, this was no ordinary rafting trip. Rather than using conventional canoes or rafts,... we built the rafts from lodge pole pines which were lashed together to create a 12’x8’ structure. It also included a top deck...In our months of preparation, we decided it would be smart to have a satellite phone with us, just in case. We were to be rafting down the lower portion of the Green River between Green River City and Moab in Utah. We knew that cell phones would not work. I had gone to several web sites to see how much a rental would cost and concluded that Outfitter Satellite had the best price and [was] the most convenient. We placed the order more than a month ahead of time and the [Globalstar] phone arrived right on schedule. The night before we left, I tested the phone to make sure it worked and to make sure I knew how to use it. The phone came with plenty of simple documentation, but all I did was look at a few of the pictures in the book and then I just dialed. It worked!

When we finally assembled and launched our rafts down the Green, we were having a great time. We had the phone tied to a post in one of the rafts and I was glad it was in its waterproof case because one never knows what can happen on a river, as we were soon to find out. About five miles into our 48 mile trip one of our rafts capsized throwing its 13 person crew and all its gear into the river. It took over an hour to regroup the people and equipment because they disbursed all over the river. But we finally got everyone on shore. At that time we knew that the trip could not continue as planned. The raft was lost and there was no way to put that many people and their gear on the remaining three rafts. This is where the satellite phone became our lifeline. We had designated my wife, who stayed at home, as our official contact person. I placed the call and connected with no problems. We let her know what had happened and that everyone was safe. After several more phone calls, we devised a rescue plan and by the next morning we had 31 of the 49 people safely home while 18 went on with the remaining rafts to conclude the trip. Before we separated, I made sure that they took the phone with them and they called us each night to assure us that all was well. I cannot adequately express the sense of security we felt having that phone with us. When the Grand County Sheriff department came to pull us out they commented on how our satellite phone made their job so much easier. I know that I will by sponsoring many more trips with the youth of our church. This experience convinced me that I will never be without a phone again. It is great to know that I can go to remote places and still have clear and easy access to help. Thank you for your service.
